Laura Petrovich-Cheney, Contingent, 2009, Canvas, glue, bees wax, oil paint, wool yarn, 5" x 5" x 2.5"

This work is  part of an eight box series constructed of 5” x 5” canvases. It was my first attempt to create three-dimensional objects. They are a kind of painted sculptures – essentially, I had glued two canvases together and then really altered the flat surfaces of the canvas by ripping, tearing, wrapping yarn, burning on wax, and painting. The reductive and additive processes uncovered and revealed a visceral connection to the materials.
