Jean M. Judd, Fiesta Pinwheels (River Eddy #1), 2005, Thread on commercial textile, 33" x 33"

I saw pinwheels that I played with as a child as I was designing this textile artwork. Other’s who see the quilt on display tell me they see a river eddy that makes potholes in the bedrock of the river. This piece has a more relaxed feeling; like when a canoe paddle makes an eddy as you are paddling down a quiet river. The hand quilting in the border is reminiscent of Art Deco designs from 1910 to 1939. Each pinwheel has been hand quilted around each spoke to bring out the shape.
