CELESTIAL COLLISION, PHANTOM STARBURST, and PHALAYNX CRESCENDO are three major columns in this exhibit at PS 122. The columns go from floor to ceiling, emanating from curvilinear bases that conceal the mechanics behind their strength and fragility.
The strands of string comprise the physical presence of columns, knotted at points of measured intervals according to height of the room. The string lengths between the knots are short at the top and get larger towards the bottom, to provide an acute perspective to the vertical form.
Utilizing the string as lines in space creates the illusion of both solidity and impermanence, in forms that seem symmetrical and dynamic. The suggestion of movement is interpreted differently in each piece, which visually recollects ephemeral moments with light and physical matter. The work has a platonic admiration of minimal form, as well as a humorous interplay of what our notions of sculpture are presumed to be.
