Nicholas Fraser, The Paterson Project, 2010, powdered chalk, 43’ x 65’

The Paterson Project interwove two distinct sources on the floor of a defunct silk dying factory: interviews with former Paterson factory workers (recollecting job processes, labor conflicts and day to day routines) overlaid with passages from William Carlos Williams’ epic poem Paterson (meditations on memory, loss and the mutability of the written word at its point of inception). Laid out in powdered chalk, both can only be examined by walking directly upon them.
