- Personal Statement
My art is a process like faith. As any “true believer,” I’m going through stages of having my faith tested. I’m trying to learn more and more about what it is I believe. Like my biblical namesake, I’m a doubter.
Faith without works is dead. My “works” accrue meaning through their interconnectivity created by my conceptual processes. For example, a series of consecutive marks bleed into one another. Residual ink from previous drawings is transferred onto new ones. Failed drawings become the ground for new ones. Glue left after I prematurely pull a cast object from its mold will become part of the next.
I think that art, like people, wants to be understood not interpreted. Understanding means that you come to grips with the work of art in its completeness: its flaws, its moods, as well as the way it looks. To evoke a cliché, you find the stuff beyond its materials that an artwork is really made of. This process of understanding can’t be done in a single viewing. That is why when I look at art, especially my own, a hundred glances or a hundred moments are better than a hundred consecutive minutes. The time in between the glances is when one begins to understand.
In short, I’ve got a lot of thinking and feeling and hoping to do. My art is a process like faith, but it is not religion. It is something that helps me understand.
